What is resin casting?

Very simply, this involves pouring liquid resin mixed with fillers and a hardener into a mould.

This term is used to describe polyester resin which is an unsaturated, thermosetting resin. The resin is usually mixed with a ground stone powder and a hardener is added before the mixture is poured in to the mould. The hardener creates an exothermic reaction which allows the material to cure in the mould.

This term is usually used to describe a process where a resin cast is produced with a thin layer of bronze powder on the outer surface. The main advantage of this process is that a piece can be produced with a bronze finish, but at the fraction of the price of a solid bronze item.

Plastic injection moulding involves injecting a molten plastic material under pressure into a mould. The advantage of this process is that it produces large numbers of parts at high speed. The main disadvantage of injections moulding is the costs of producing the tool which can run into £1000‘s – polyester resin casting moulds can be produced at a fraction of this cost.

We work with filled polyester resin. In the sections below we will answer some of the questions in relation to this material.
